National Geographic Society buys wind power

ARLINGTON, Virginia, US, July 26, 2006 (Refocus Weekly) The National Geographic Society will purchase 39 million kWh of green power certificates, at a lower cost than buying conventional electricity.

Pepco Energy Services will supply renewable energy credits to the Society’s headquarters in Washington. Pepco has served as the power supplier to the Society since January 2005, under a contract that recently was extended to mid-2008.

The 29-month contract calls for 39 million kWh of renewable energy certificates. When combined with the cost of electric supply under the existing contract, the National Geographic Society will pay less than the currently effective standard offer service rates for customers in the District of Columbia.

Pepco will provide Green-e certified renewable energy certificates from Sterling Planet, which represent wind-generating resources in the United States. It also sells green power to the federal departments of agriculture, labour, transportation, energy and interior, and currently supplies 100% renewable resources to the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum on Ellis Island, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington.

“Purchasing wind power is part of National Geographic’s commitment to incorporate environmentally friendly processes into all aspects of its business,” says Christopher Liedel. “As a result of our efforts to minimize the environmental impact of our operations, National Geographic headquarters is one of only 28 existing office buildings in the country currently ‘green certified’ by the U.S. Green Building Council.”

Energy-saving initiatives implemented since 2001 allow the Society to consume 2.7 million kWh less per year than five years ago.

The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest non-profit scientific and educational organizations. Founded in 1888, it reaches 350 million people each month through its official journal, National Geographic, and four other magazines; National Geographic Channel; television documentaries; radio programs; films; books; videos and DVDs; maps; and interactive media. It has funded 8,000 scientific research projects and supports an education program to promote geographic literacy.

Pepco Energy Services is a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, and has annual revenue of $1 billion from the sale of power. It is not the same company as Potomac Electric Power Company, and prices of Pepco are not set by the Public Service Commission.
